Privacy Policy
Last updated November 1, 2026
The short version
- We collect what you give us to get you caught up, and nothing more than we need.
- We never sell your information, and we never use it to market anything other than our own services.
- We only contact the IRS on your behalf after you sign an authorization form.
- Your documents are stored encrypted, and only the team working your case can see them.
- You can ask us to see, correct or delete your information at any time.
1Who we are
Expat Tax Amnesty ("we," "us") is a private, 100% online tax firm. We help Americans living abroad, and people with foreign accounts or income, get compliant with the IRS. We are not affiliated with the IRS or any government agency.
This policy explains how we handle information collected through this website, our consultation form, our client portal, and our work on your case.
2What we collect
Information you give us. When you fill out our consultation form, download one of our templates, or become a client, we may collect:
- Your name and email address.
- Your answers about your situation, such as the country you live in, what you need help with, whether the IRS or your bank has contacted you, and anything you write in the "tell us about your situation" box.
- Documents you upload, such as IRS or bank letters, U.S. and foreign tax returns, payslips and account statements.
- Information we need to prepare your filings, such as your Social Security number or ITIN, income, foreign account balances and assets. We only ask for this after you become a client, through our secure portal, never by plain email.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, we receive basic technical information when you visit, such as your browser type, device, the pages you view and the site that referred you.
Information from the IRS. With your signed authorization, we may obtain your tax transcripts and account records directly from the IRS.
3How we use it
- To review your situation and reply to your consultation request.
- To prepare and file your U.S. tax returns, FBARs and related forms, and to represent you before the IRS when needed.
- To send you updates about your case, deadlines and documents we need.
- To bill you for the services you agreed to.
- To keep our website and portal secure and working properly.
- To meet our legal and professional obligations.
If you send a consultation request and don't become a client, we may send you a few follow-up emails about your request. If you download a template, we may send you one follow-up email about it. If you also tick the box to join our mailing list, we may send you occasional emails about U.S. taxes for Americans abroad until you unsubscribe. We only add you to the mailing list if you tick that box. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
4Your tax return information
Federal law (Internal Revenue Code section 7216) strictly limits how tax professionals can use or disclose tax return information. We use your tax return information only to provide the services you hired us for. We will not use it for any other purpose, or disclose it to anyone outside our firm, without your separate written consent, except where the law allows or requires it.
6How we protect it
As a tax professional, we are subject to the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and the FTC Safeguards Rule, and we maintain a written information security plan that follows IRS Publication 4557. Our safeguards include:
- Encryption of documents in transit and at rest.
- Multi-factor authentication for our staff and our client portal.
- Access limited to the team members working on your case.
- Regular staff security training and reviews of our providers.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach ever affects your information, we will notify you and the appropriate authorities as the law requires.
7How long we keep it
We keep client records for as long as we need them to serve you and to meet our legal and professional record-keeping obligations, generally seven years after your case closes. If you send a consultation request or download a template but don't become a client, we delete your form answers and uploads within 24 months, or sooner if you ask. If you join our mailing list, we keep your name and email address until you unsubscribe.
9Your choices and rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- Tell you what personal information we have about you, and give you a copy.
- Correct information that is wrong.
- Delete your information, unless we're required to keep it by law or professional rules.
- Stop sending you marketing emails.
If you live in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia or another country with its own privacy law, you may have additional rights under that law, such as the right to object to certain uses or to complain to your local data protection authority. We're based in the U.S., and your information may be stored and processed outside your country, including in the United States and the European Union. We will not treat you differently for using any of these rights. To make a request, email us using the address below. We may need to confirm your identity first.
10Children
Our website is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information online. If we handle a minor's tax matter, we work with a parent or guardian.
11Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll change the date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we'll tell current clients by email before it takes effect.
12Contact us
Questions about your privacy, or want to make a request? Send us a message through the form on our home page and say it's a privacy request, or reply to any email from our team. We'll answer by email.
